SchoolChronic skills shortages throughout the country that were creating problems for industry spurred the federal government to fund 25 Australian Technical Colleges across Australia. Six of these are in Victoria including the Bendigo campus.

In the 1980s, the emphasis had moved away from technical training and into university courses and the result has been that there is now an acute shortage of skilled tradespeople throughout the country. The purpose of Australian Technical Colleges is to put more emphasis back into the trades.
Principal of the Australian Technical College, Bendigo, Dr Michael Langdon, explains: “There are two main aims. The first is to increase the number of students in apprenticeships and doing trades and the second is to promote the trades as a career to aspire to.” This is achieved by building relationships and partnerships with secondary schools, traditional technical colleges and people in industry throughout the district.

Balgownie WineryEstablished in 1969, Balgownie Estate Winery is the oldest vineyard in the Bendigo region.

Its flagship wines – Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz – are just two of the dry reds that put Bendigo on the map as far as wine is concerned. Set on 150 acres at Maiden Gully and with an additional eleven acres at Yarra Valley, Balgownie Estate is both a top wine producer and a popular tourist attraction. Yarra Valley and the Bendigo region have a history of wine making that goes back to the 1860s. If the 1850s were the “gold rush” years, the 1860s were the “vine rush” years as vineyards sprang up across Victoria and miners turned to a more settled lifestyle. The early days of viticulture were strongly encouraged by the Catholic priest and scientist Joseph Bleasedale and the German cleric, the Reverend Doctor G.H. Backhaus.
